Prior to International Women’s Day, Peachy Magazine teamed up with London-based musician Yatabe to curate a list of tracks that all have influenced her life. Yatabe recently released the single “Pretty Truth” once again confidently establishing her name as an exciting new force in dance-pop. Born in Japan, Yatabe has created a unique sound with traces of Western and Japanese culture, reflected in her work.
M.I.A. -“Bad Girls”
This track has always inspired me to be disciplined and enjoy every moment in my life, Since I was young the lyrics “live fast, die young” resonated with me so much and this song will always be on my on repeat playlist.
Etta James -“At Last”
Inspires me to be strong, self sufficient and to know there is a light at the end of the tunnel. It brings me hope for the future in knowing that this pandemic will soon be over, and I know I’ll be playing this a lot when it is!
En Vogue – “Don’t Let Go (Love)”
This track inspires me because it’s by the most powerful trio of voices. It reminds me of when I was young and had a secret crush on someone but it never came to fruition. The good old days.
Flume – “Say It”
To me, it’s about taking charge and experimenting with my sexuality and being confident in my own skin. Flume has always been an inspiration for me generally and is probably one of my dream collaborations, I would love to put my vocal on one of his tracks.
This song is about me having the courage to communicate how I feel to someone, without being judged as a woman.
Fleetwood Mac – “Go Your Own Way”
This song has empowered me by giving me the strength to make my own decisions as a woman. As a female DJ in a very male dominated space, every single day you see sexist or offensive remarks on your page from guys telling you women shouldn’t DJ, but this just spurs me on to get better and better and prove them wrong. I can’t wait to perform and meet more DJ’s as things start to open up over the summer.
Red Hot Chilli Peppers – “The Power of Equality”
This to me represents equality as a whole. Especially in this current turbulent world, where Asian hate crime statistics are rising across the states and the divided and nature of pretty much everyone right now, songs like this are timeless and important.
David Bowie- “Heroes”
This to me is about men and women coming together in unison and conquering life as a team. Team is a word that is very important to me, and I cannot wait to travel the world and play shows again with my team.
Ryuichi Sakamoto – “Energy Flow”
This has helped me stay present in every moment and align my inner spirituality and find my zen through life.
DJ Hasebe – “Tail of Old Nick”
This song to me is about encompassing culture and race.
